Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform the public sector by enhancing the quality and efficiency of government services, improving policymaking and decision-making, and addressing complex societal challenges. However, adopting and implementing AI in the public sector faces several barriers, such as data governance issues, skills gaps, regulatory uncertainties, ethical dilemmas, and social resistance. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and strategies for implementing AI in the public sector, drawing on the experiences and best practices of leading AI adopters in the government and private sectors. The paper also proposes a framework for assessing the readiness and maturity of public sector organisations for AI adoption. It identifies the key enablers and success factors for achieving AI-powered public good. The paper concludes with recommendations and future directions for public sector leaders, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to leverage AI for the public good.
