Reframing the Past and Future of Pastoralist Childhood

This concluding chapter revises existing knowledge on pastoralist childhood and child development, building on observations from the preceding chapters. The unique developmental niche and ecocultural pathways of Maasai children emphasize their autonomy in everyday learning and development, recognizing them as reliable beings. Parenting practices and children’s daily routines highly value this perspective, co-shaping an ecology of childhood independence in daily life. This framework empowers children to playfully explore their ancestral lands, initiate change, and update traditional knowledge and pastoralism amid various transitions. Yet, despite their sociocultural significance, the value of pastoralist childhood, local parenting ethnotheories, and children’s learning-by-doing remains largely overlooked in the globalization of modern development and formal education systems.
