This chapter delves into the concept of light-matter interactions, tracing their historical evolution from ancient civilizations to their modern mathematical description. It serves as a foundational cornerstone upon which the subsequent chapters of this Thesis are constructed. Within this chapter, we provide a comprehensive mathematical framework for understanding the interaction between light and matter, together with a brief introduction to quantum optics and some relevant quantum information concepts.
