The newest gene technology method brings with it the promise of new cures for genetic diseases, bringing us ever closer to truly personalized medicine. It’s a fascinating and potentially controversial topic that will capture the interest of your high school students. Fortunately, there are now plenty of CRISPR-related resources available, including wet-labs that allow students to actually perform CRISPR gene editing in the classroom. Many (perhaps most) high school budgets, however, may not be in a position to purchase and implement expensive lab kits. To meet this need, there are also a variety of free and inexpensive resources to introduce CRISPR in the classroom. The goal of this chapter is to introduce you to CRISPR (also called CRISPR-Cas9) and direct you to some resources for teaching CRISPR to your high school students.
