Rooms to Rent: Lodging Spatiality and Environment

This chapter articulates the absolute material space, relational space, and relative space of lodging. Given that all types of lodging fill in the interstices of lived space, we explore the types, conditions, and impacts of lodging conditions across all density areas. We introduce the concept of Special Interest Space to describe the changes in localities of tenancy relationships. We unpack the multifunctionality of the lodging room and how this impacts everyday life, including health and privacy. Finally, we end the chapter with a brief look at how poor upkeep, overcrowding, dirty environments and lack of privacy impact the mental and physical health of lodgers.
