Properly designed orientation systems in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) contribute to improving the user experience by facilitating the orientation of students, teachers, non-teaching staff and visitors, particularly when the HEI is a new space/environment for them, thus allowing them to have a more functional and engaging experience. This research proposal “Equitable Wayfinding and Wayshowing Systems in Higher Education Buildings: Case Study of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre,” has the following research question: What is the role of equitable wayfinding and wayshowing in the community of four schools of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre? For new students and members of the academic community, an accessible orientation system plays a crucial role in embedding a sense of belonging. This contributes to a more welcoming academic environment that is conducive to personal and academic development. The implementation of efficient guidance systems in a HEI is of the utmost importance, and the study on the subject can bring benefits to society and the academic community. The aim is not only to adequately inform individuals who are readers of their mother tongue Portuguese, but also readers of English (universal language), readers of Brail-le tactile writing, readers of Portuguese sign language, non-readers, blind/low vision, color blind, deaf/low hearing, as well as people with reduced mobility and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The aim is to make information clearer, more useful, and more effective for everyone in the context, facilitating people’s participation in spaces and promoting the right to education for all in an equitable manner. Accessibility applied to guidance systems makes the passage of information in the environment/space more accessible to anyone, promoting inclusion through equal opportunities and fairness according to the different needs of the population, contributing to the attraction of talent and the reputation of the institution, and consequently the development of society.
