The COVID-19 virus infection inflicted serious devastation on the wealthy and powerful nations, leading to sickness, death, and social unrest including the disarticulation of economies on a global magnitude not seen in a long time. Though the COVID-19 vaccine was speedily created, but the distribution and administration revealed a global inequality between the developed and African countries which were more disproportionately affected, due to the deliberate stockpiling and hoarding of the vaccines by wealthy countries in what could be termed “vaccine nationalism”. This chapter examines how intentional hoarding and stockpiling of COVID-19 vaccine (vaccine nationalism) by wealthy nations, has deepened Africa's reliance on the West. The paper is qualitatively descriptive with our discourse guided by the dependency theory. Findings demonstrated that Africa's reliance on Western nations for things she would ordinarily provide for herself has been brought to the forefront by the COVID-19 pandemic. The stockpiling and disruptions to global supply of COVID-19 vaccines by the West had a disproportionate impact on Africa due to its reliance on external suppliers of the vaccines. To prevent a recurrence, the chapter made several recommendations, which among others, include the urgent need to address Africa's low manufacturing and supply capacity.
