In her graphic novel Maternasis, published in 1967, Spanish author Núria Pompeia takes upon a revolutionary task: in the context of Franco’s dictatorship, which reduced women to an emphatically idealized image of mother, she tells a story of a woman who observes her changing pregnant body with anxiety and uneasiness. The woman in Labari’s book goes through key experiences related to pregnant bodies: she is uncomfortable, sometimes struggles to recognize herself in her new form, and, also, must negotiate constant intrusion of others: the doctors or the ones touching her belly. This book brought to the attention of Spanish society a scope of problems that women were not allowed to talk about. The aim of this chapter is to reveal, by depicting the uncomfortable truths about pregnancy, how Núria Pompeia challenges the narratives about ideal motherhood and explores how the pregnant body shifts women’s identity and relationship with her surroundings.
