Do-It-Yourself Project: Sand Casting and Lost PLA/Wax

This chapter highlights the real motivation to embark on writing this book. The products that went from being a design concept into tangible metallic parts are presented as a practical example of the capabilities of additive manufacturing. The parts can be made of PLA as well as well as metal. With design and CAD knowledge, the skilled artisan is removed from the equation and anyone with a design idea and good CAD modeling knowledge can design, 3D print then cast customized functional parts. The trial and error that goes into such processes is what builds the know-how, and the more a person is involved in this process the deeper the experience and knowledge become.
