Computer-Aided Design Role in Additive Manufacturing

This chapter highlights the importance and procedure of digitizing the design idea. After a product is converted from requirements and constraints into dimensions, contours and materials, the product takes shape and moves into the tangible world. There are many benefits of converting a hand sketch into a digital file, including easier modification, sharing, and replication. The chapter concludes with a generic tutorial on basic functions found in almost all current 3D modeling software and how to export the file into formats that will be used for subsequent processing and manufacturing steps.
