This chapter argues that artificial intelligence (AI) has the transformative potential to address critical environmental sustainability challenges. We can significantly enhance energy efficiency, manage natural resources more effectively, and reduce pollution by harnessing AI’s advanced data processing, pattern recognition, and predictive capabilities. Key applications include optimizing renewable energy sources, accurately predicting energy demands, and minimizing waste. AI-driven precision farming can boost agricultural productivity while reducing environmental impact by optimizing water and fertilizer use. The chapter underscores the pivotal role of AI in monitoring and managing air and water quality, enabling timely interventions to prevent environmental damage. Furthermore, AI offers innovative urban planning and resource management solutions, such as optimizing traffic flow, improving waste management, and promoting green infrastructure to support sustainable cities and communities. Despite these opportunities, the chapter acknowledges several challenges in adopting AI for environmental sustainability. These include AI models’ high energy consumption, ethical concerns, and the digital divide that limits access to AI technologies. To overcome these challenges, the chapter suggests developing sustainable AI practices, ensuring equitable access to AI technologies, and integrating AI into comprehensive policy frameworks. By addressing these challenges and leveraging AI’s capabilities, the chapter concludes that AI can drive significant positive changes for our planet, helping to achieve long-term sustainability goals. The main argument is that while AI holds great promise for environmental sustainability, a balanced approach that includes technological innovation, strategic planning, and ethical considerations is essential for realizing its full potential.

摘要
