Developing and Validating Islamic Pro-Environmental Behavior Scale in the Lights of Maqasid Shariah: Malaysia Evidence

Most scholars have largely overlooked environmentally responsible behavior in the context of Islam. This study aims to develop and assess An Islamic pro-environmental behavior (iPEB) scale in the light of Maqasid Shariah. A new construct for understanding pro-environmental behavior, incorporating five dimensions of preservation derived from Islamic teachings. Inspired by Maqasid Shariah, this study collected data from 270 staff members in Malaysian public universities on convenience sampling. The results revealed a 23 items scale including preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage and wealth as five dimensions of iPEB. The study highlights the significance of incorporating Islamic values in promoting environmental behavior, especially in Muslim-majority countries. It calls for further research on the link between Islamic values and environmental sustainability, especially in Malaysia. The findings guide community leaders, environmental organizations, and legislators in creating Islamic-based initiatives. The study specifically develops a new iPEB scale for a Muslim-majority nation, contributing to research on religion's role in encouraging pro-environmental behaviors and aligning environmental sustainability with Islamic principles, offering a unique perspective on this matter.
