Towards Utopia

After the War, Morton continued working in education (including the WEA) and in local politics which involved his election to the Urban District CouncilUrban District Council (Leiston). His ideas about English utopias, utopianism, and cultural heritage were also gathering momentum, including the publication of a short collection of essays, Language of MenMorton, Arthur LeslieBooks and pamphlets: (1945) (1945). Morton was now looking at the connection between the concept of utopia and the emergence of bourgeois capitalismCapitalism and how understandings of utopia were changing with the expected transformation to socialism. This thinking was also tied up with his increasing interest in the significance of religious and political radicalism and historic failure, marking a further increase in his shift away from (some of) his earlier criticisms.
