This chapter explores the intricate domain of toxicology within Arctic marine environments, underscoring the heightened concern associated with the susceptibility of this ecosystem and its biotic constituents to a diverse array of pollutants. The Arctic region is confronted with an array of multifaceted challenges emanating from both local anthropogenic activities and transboundary pollution sources. These contaminants span a wide range, including but not limited to heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), hydrocarbons, and newly recognized emerging contaminants. The distinct physicochemical and ecological attributes of the Arctic, such as prolonged photoperiods of darkness, extreme cryogenic conditions, and the extensive presence of sea ice, potentiate the persistence and bioaccumulation of these toxicants. The cold temperatures can slow the degradation of pollutants, while sea ice can act as a reservoir, sequestering pollutants and later releasing them into the environment. Furthermore, the traditional subsistence practices of Arctic indigenous communities, which heavily depend on the consumption of local marine biota, exacerbate the exposure risks to these contaminants. This dietary dependence amplifies the vulnerability of these populations to bioaccumulated toxins, posing significant health risks. Therefore, a thorough and nuanced understanding of the toxicological dynamics in Arctic waters is crucial. Such knowledge is vital for the formulation of effective mitigation and remediation strategies aimed at protecting both the fragile Arctic ecosystems and the health of human populations reliant on these resources. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of toxicological research in the Arctic, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring, advanced analytical techniques, and interdisciplinary approaches to address the complex environmental and public health challenges in this unique region.
