Impacts of Invasive Species on the Arctic Environment

This chapter addresses the critical issue of the introduction of invasive species into the Arctic marine environment by ships and other marine vessels. The movement of ships and vessels across global shipping routes facilitates the unintentional transfer of non-native species from distant parts of the world to the Arctic region. These species, known as invasive or exotic species, can establish populations in the Arctic marine environment and potentially outcompete native species for resources, disrupt ecosystem dynamics, and alter biodiversity patterns. This chapter explores the various pathways through which invasive species are introduced into the Arctic marine environment by ships and vessels. Ballast water discharge, hull fouling, and biofouling on equipment and cargo are identified as key vectors for the transport of invasive species. Ballast water, taken on board by ships for stability and discharged at ports of call, can contain a diverse array of marine organisms, including plankton, larvae, and even fish and invertebrates. Hull fouling, the accumulation of organisms on the hulls of ships, can also harbor invasive species that can be released into new environments when vessels transit to Arctic waters. Furthermore, this chapter examines the ecological impacts of invasive species introduction on the Arctic marine environment. Invasive species can outcompete native species for food, habitat, and space, leading to declines in native populations and changes in ecosystem structure and function. In some cases, invasive species can also introduce diseases or parasites that affect native organisms, further exacerbating ecological imbalances. Strategies for preventing and mitigating the introduction of invasive species into the Arctic marine environment were discussed. International regulations such as the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) aim to reduce the transfer of invasive species through ballast water discharge by requiring ships to implement ballast water management measures. Additionally, hull cleaning and antifouling coatings can help minimize the spread of invasive species through hull fouling. This chapter thus highlights the importance of addressing the issue of invasive species introduction in the Arctic marine environment and emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts among governments, industry stakeholders, and the scientific community to develop effective management strategies and safeguard the ecological integrity of Arctic ecosystems.
