Light Pollution in the Arctic Marine Environment

Light pollution, an emerging concern in the realm of ecotoxicology, is increasingly recognized for its potential impacts on marine ecosystems worldwide. This chapter endeavors to integrate the phenomenon of light pollution into the multifaceted analysis of stressors affecting the Arctic marine environment. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of light pollution, delineating its sources, characteristics, and spatial extent. Artificial light sources, including urban areas, industrial facilities, and maritime traffic, contribute to the proliferation of light pollution, which manifests in the form of skyglow, glare, and artificial light at night (ALAN). This chapter elucidates how these anthropogenic sources of light alter natural light regimes, disrupting the diurnal and seasonal rhythms of Arctic marine organisms. This chapter further explores the ecological implications of light pollution on Arctic marine fauna and flora. Light-sensitive organisms, such as plankton, fish, seabirds, and marine mammals, are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of artificial light. Disruption of natural light cues, such as moonlight and polarized light patterns, can interfere with navigation, foraging, reproduction, and predator–prey interactions. Furthermore, this chapter examines how light pollution may exacerbate other stressors, such as climate change and habitat degradation, compounding the challenges faced by Arctic marine ecosystems. Moreover, this chapter integrates light pollution into the broader framework of multi-stress analysis, which seeks to elucidate the cumulative impacts of multiple stressors on marine environments. Field studies, laboratory experiments, remote sensing, and modeling approaches are employed to assess the responses of marine organisms to varying light conditions and quantify the ecological consequences of light pollution. In conclusion, this chapter highlights the importance of incorporating light pollution into the multi-stress analysis of the Arctic marine environment. By elucidating the ecological impacts of light pollution and its interactions with other stressors, this chapter aims to inform conservation efforts, policy decisions, and management strategies aimed at mitigating the impacts of human activities on Arctic marine ecosystems. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific research, we can better understand the complexities of light pollution and work toward preserving the ecological integrity of the Arctic marine environment for future generations.
