Seeing the climate crisis as a water crisis, the question arises as to how current wastewater treatment management could be changed to mitigate the effects of climate change while contributing to slow down the increase in the average temperature. An innovative wastewater management system could not only reduce water demand, but would also provide an additional, locally available energy source as well as a better recovery of nutrients compared to a conventional wastewater treatment management system. However, the gain from an innovative wastewater management system depends on a set of different factors that are partly given, like the local climate, but also the outcome of socioeconomic developments in the settlements under investigation. The following four Chapters “ Adapting the German Bioenergy Village Concept to Los Ríos Region in Southern Chile: Integrating Community, Water,Energy and Organic Waste Management – Circular Bioeconomy in Chile and Germany ” outline the main features of the innovative wastewater management system.
