This chapter outlines the establishment and development of the virtual Institute of Eco-Industrial Development (IECO), a collaborative initiative between German and Chilean research institutions, including KIT, UCH, UdeC, and UACh. The IECO aims to promote sustainable resource management and energy usage through a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on eco-industrial development as a framework for research, teaching, and innovation. Following a successful funding proposal to Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the institute received support for six years, later extended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to enhance its research infrastructure. This funding catalyzed the formation of new partnerships and strengthened existing ties within the German-Chilean collaboration landscape. The IECO's vision encompasses the sustainable use of resources like water and biomass, urban mining, and the circular economy, aiming to regenerate urbanized areas and transform industrial residues into valuable materials. The document also acknowledges the contributions of various stakeholders, including funding agencies and partner universities, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing global sustainability challenges. Through its initiatives, the IECO seeks to position itself as a significant player in fostering sustainable development practices and enhancing cooperation between academia and industry in both countries.
