The Epidemiological Significance of Mental Illness in Probation

The literature on the prevalence of mental health disorders is presented. One main study from England is described in detail. The Council of Europe’s survey findings on the recording of prevalence in other countries are explored. Finally, an argument is rehearsed that an understanding of the prevalence of mental health disorders in probation is an essential precursor to an appreciation of the need for mental health services for this population.
