Alcohol Use Disorder, Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease, and Liver Transplantation

Alcohol use disorder is a chronic, relapsing illness, which can cause physical, psychological, and psychosocial harms to patients. The most significant of medical consequences is alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). Liver transplant is the only curative strategy in patients with severe ALD, but addressing psychosocial factors associated with drinking and relapse and offering treatment options for AUD are equally important. In this chapter, we will proceed to discuss the definitions of alcohol use disorder, alcohol-related liver disease and its workup, treatment options for AUD, relapse, and liver transplantation.
