The Role of Translation in International Climate Negotiations

The article discusses the role of translation in international climate negotiations, highlighting the importance of translation in enabling different actors to negotiate a common course of action. This rich evidence on translation and climate change issues, which is by no means exhaustive, highlights the need for deeper examination of the processes and obstacles associated with translation, not only in fields of study aimed at ensuring survival on this planet, but in translation studies itself. It encourages broader discussion among intercultural and transcultural translators and other stakeholders dealing with climate change and acknowledges the key role of translation in global environmental policy. It shows the translation frictions in climate negotiations and identifies strategies for identifying and avoiding landmines. Proposed strategies include promoting diversity in translation teams, developing terminology databases and making the most of technological advances in translation. The proposal highlights the central role of translators in effective climate action and reminds us that the Paris Agreement climate solution is largely driven by innovation in translation and the power of technological progress.
