Translation as a Risk Factor: Addressing Linguistic Ambiguity in Cybersecurity Protocols and Guidelines

摘要

Aware of the growing importance of cybersecurity in today's information and socially connected world, the study attempted to explain the problems that arise when translating existing cybersecurity standards and guidelines into and from languages ​​other than the original language. To clarify these issues affecting cybersecurity protocol translations, the root causes of these issues are presented along with suggested solutions in hopes of mitigating any subsequent security issues that may arise. Modern technological advances are increasing the number of large-scale computer networks, which require large numbers of professional users accessing them in languages ​​other than English, the widely used technical language of the cybersecurity industry. Due to differences in technology, information and data capabilities in different linguistic regions of the world, it is important to conduct research on issues related to the translation of cybersecurity standards and guidelines. A problem-focused approach will be proposed, such as the use of jargon-free and unambiguous source language texts, controlled terminology, and the creation of a new, dedicated subfield in cybersecurity translation. However, the significant impact of the professional knowledge and experience of technical translators cannot be ignored, especially in the complex and high-risk technical field of cyberspace. Given that translation is an activity that contains an irreducible element of ambiguity, untranslatability and polysemy, human intelligence must continue to play a key role in keeping as little ambiguity or polysemy as possible in the processes of keeping the meaning of the text intact in the source and target languages.
