The Role of Cultural and Social Diversity in Achieving Sustainable Development in Arab Countries

In a globalized world, cultural and social diversity pose special challenges to the sustainable development goals of Arab countries. Arab societies are particularly affected by authoritarian regimes or residual colonial legacies that pursue authoritarian state policies that disregard homogeneity and community exclusion, thereby neglecting Arab countries’ sustainable development goals. Such policies, aimed at the state monopolizing power and gaining the loyalty of elites, tend to marginalize and exclude the poor and middle class due to the economic rationality of economic policies. Furthermore, foreign economic, military, and cultural influence exacerbates regional inequality, economic marginalization, and immigration, and makes the globalized Arab region more diverse. This study aims to use content analysis to examine cultural and social diversity in Arab countries and compare it with other, more homogeneous societies to assess the impact of diversity on social and cultural outcomes. The findings illustrate the complex interplay between globalization, cultural cohesion and conflict and suggest that Arab states must simultaneously embrace cultural and social diversity while developing increasingly open and tolerant societies to ensure sustainable development.
