Euphemistic Discourse Markers in Arabic

The objective of this research is to examine the various pragmatic roles of the Arabic term “ʔit-tafaddal” within diverse social contexts. A dataset comprising 50 interviews involving participants from different social backgrounds was analyzed. Relevance theory served as the underlying theoretical framework for this investigation. The recorded interviews were transcribed and thoroughly examined for the purposes of this study. The findings indicate that the functional use of the term “ʔit-tafaddal” is evident, serving a total of ten pragmatic functions in Jordanian Spoken Arabic.
