The Discovery of General Methods for Elastic Systems, 1852–1875

In order to understand the evolution of mechanics, we must discuss the revolution that occurs in the development of constructions between 1852 and 1875, when there was an important evolution of physics thanks to the influence of Sadi CarnotCarnot, Sadi, Emile ClapeyronClapeyron, Émile and many others. This will also help us to understand the reasons why the supports problem first addressed by La HireLa Hire, Philippe de in 1695 remained unsolved for so long. Moreover, it will help us understand how the history of constructions will move beyond that problem’s dead-end street.
