An Evaluation of Turkish Textbooks Used in Language Teaching for Refugee Students

  • Metin Altunkaynak

摘要

Approximately four million Syrian refugees and their offspring have sought sanctuary in Turkey. Textbooks play a significant role in facilitating language acquisition and language application among students who are receiving blended education alongside Turkish students. The preparation, selection, and evaluation of textbooks play a crucial part in the success of second language instruction due to its significance and impact in this field. The objective of this study is to assess the degree to which textbooks align with the language learning and language utilization requirements, objectives, preferences, and anticipations of refugee students. The study will then propose recommendations based on the evaluation of the findings. The collection of qualitative data was conducted via interviews, while the development of assessment criteria was undertaken for document review. The research results revealed that the evaluated textbooks exhibited positive attributes, such as the inclusion of desired learning outcomes, well-designed content and linguistic input, appropriate activities, and effective approaches and methods for language learning and utilisation. However, the study also identified certain shortcomings in the textbooks that require further enhancement.
