Traumatic Corneal Abrasion

This case explores the management of a male who was assaulted with pepper spray regarding petty theft that left him with bilateral central corneal abrasions that were poorly managed by a local hospital emergency room. The patient initially sought treatment in the emergency room, where he received a saline flush and antibiotics but continued to experience pain and discomfort. Upon evaluation at an eye clinic, the patient’s corneal abrasions were identified, which were characterized by central abrasions with rolled epithelial edges and stromal edema. Treatment included cycloplegic agents, antibiotics, bandage contact lenses, freeze-dried amniotic membranes, oral doxycycline, and vitamin C to support corneal healing. The case highlights the unique challenges presented by chemical exposure-related corneal injuries, emphasizing the importance of timely diagnosis and ongoing management for optimal visual outcomes.
