Acquired Homonymous Hemianopia

Stroke is the most common cause of homonymous hemianopia (HH) in adults. This condition can affect the ability to drive or read and increase the potential for injury due to falls or inability to navigate around obstacles. Identifying and managing these visual difficulties can have a significant effect on a patient’s quality of life. Denial is a disorder of self-awareness that is frequent after acute stroke, with a potential negative influence in the care and rehabilitation outcomes of patients. As a clinician, navigating denial can be important in optimizing a patient’s recovery potential. This case report explores overcoming denial in a patient with a right-sided homonymous hemianopia due to stroke. Effective treatment options are also discussed, including prism.
