Ocular Surface Disease and Cosmetics

Ocular surface disease can manifest in a plethora of ways and are the result of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is an inflammation of the eyelid margins and causes inspissation of the sebaceous oil-producing glands of the eyelid margin. Inflamed lid margins distort tear film production which results in ocular surface disease. External chemicals found in cosmetics can also accelerate the inflammatory process that results in MGD. Contact dermatitis is another inflammatory process that results in the irritation of the skin that causes discomfort, often worse in individuals who suffer from chronic eczema. Chemicals found in anti-aging creams can play a role in the development of skin irritation and discomfort. It is important to be cautious of the chemicals found in modern day cosmetics and moisturizers. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) refers to such products as cosmeceuticals as they are known to possess medicinal benefits yet are available to consumers without a prescription. This case report explores the world of modern day cosmeceuticals and their effects on two patients who presented to the clinic.
