Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes, or more aptly diabetes mellitus (DM), is a metabolic disorder that occurs due to physiologically inadequate control of blood glucose levels in the body. There are three major types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational. Diabetes can cause a myriad of ocular problems. It is also important to note other conditions that may present similar findings and why differentiation can be key to proper treatment of the underlying disease. The growing public health crisis of diabetes is at the fore of healthcare discussions worldwide. With proper treatment, one can limit the manifestations of the disease in the eye as well as the rest of the body.
