Chorioretinitis Sclopetaria

This case discusses the presentation of traumatic chorioretinitis sclopetaria with vitreous hemorrhage and retinal break following blunt trauma to the nasal canthus in a 52-year-old Caucasian male. The clinical examination suggested a presumed diagnosis of traumatic chorioretinitis sclopetaria with vitreous hemorrhage and retinal break. He was referred to a retina specialist for laser retinopexy overlying the retinal break proximal to the choroidal rupture. The patient’s vision improved during follow-up appointments. Sclopetaria is a rare condition resulting from high-velocity projectile injury, and its prognosis varies widely, with early diagnosis and prompt management being crucial for optimizing visual outcomes. Ancillary testing, including fundus photography, ultrasonography, OCT, fundus fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green angiography, plays a crucial role in diagnosis and assessment. The choice of treatment, whether conservative or surgical, depends on the severity of ocular damage, associated complications, and the extent of visual impairment. Monitoring these patients closely and emphasizing the significance of safety measures, such as wearing protective glasses in high-risk environments, is essential for preventing such traumatic ocular injuries.
