Electrocatalyst Design for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

As discussed earlier, chlorine evolution reaction, makes seawater electrolysis more intriguing than that of freshwater electrolysis due to competition with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode. Therefore, significant effort has been devoted to engineering the selective OER electrocatalyst to enhance performance and suppress the chlorine evolution reaction. Based on this, in this chapter, an overview of the latest developments in OER electrocatalysts for seawater splitting was outlined with a highlighting on their significant selectivity performance.
