Statistics Learning and Gender: The Case of Greek University Students

Gender bias in education has been providing diverse topics for empirical research in recent decades. The present paper presents some of the results of a survey conducted at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Science at the University of Piraeus between October 2022 and June 2023, considering various aspects of gender bias in statistics education. The respective questionnaire was distributed electronically and completed by 318 students. This sample comprised a total of 141 male and 177 female participants. Our results indicate that according to the students’ perceptions there is no major difference between males and females in terms of performance or teaching adequacy, but females still tend to hide relevant academic achievement in professional environments, probably due to stereotypes relating to patriarchal norms. This finding may be an indication that male-dominance is still pertinent to various hierarchical structures within the Greek society, which to a large extent, retains patriarchal traits.
