Conclusion

The concluding chapter of the book revisits the rationale for undertaking the research on LPP in ASEAN. The findings of the study derived from interviews with LPP scholars and key ASEAN officials and based on analysis of available policy documents as reported in Chaps. 4 , 5 and 6 are summarised in this chapter to present the main argument. The chapter also outlines the major contributions of the work in the field of LPP in general and supra-national planning in particular. Keeping the focus on the English-only policy in ASEAN and reflecting on the findings reported in the previous chapters, we ask fundamental questions about language policy, policymaking, policy ownership and sharing, and efficiency in addressing language problems on the one hand, and sustaining linguistic diversity and ecology on the other. The chapter also acknowledges limitations of the present research and suggests further research that can complement the present research endeavour.
