摘要

This chapter discusses theories and principles as they relate to language policy and planning (LPP) at the supranational level. The chapter first examines types of LPP, with a particular focus on status planning and acquisition planning. The section that follows explores the LPP context of the book, which is the ASEAN. The discussion of agency in LPP that follows provides methodological justification for engaging with key actors to deliberate on ASEAN’s LPP process and imagined linguistic future(s). As the book is rooted in critical theory in language planning, language ideology and language ecology serve as fundamental elements for understanding supranational LPP. The discussion of the key theories and principles of LPP, and the context of ASEAN, culminates in the theoretical framework (see Fig. 2.1) for the research undertaken.
