Unveiling the Nexus Between the APOE Gene and Anxiety/Depression: A Comprehensive Review
摘要
The Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is a crucial genetic factor associated with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and neuropsychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression. This chapter explores the interplay of APOE gene variants (ε2, ε3, and ε4) and environmental factors in mental health. The APOE gene is involved in lipid metabolism and inflammation, influencing cognitive outcomes. APOE ε4 is a known risk factor for AD, while ε2 may have a protective effect. Environmental factors, including lifestyle and metal exposure, can modulate these genetic risks. Understanding the complex interplay of APOE and environmental factors is crucial for personalized mental health care. Early identification of genetic markers, like APOE ε4, could lead to targeted interventions and improved outcomes for individuals at risk of mental health disorders. In addition, therapeutic strategies targeting APOE, including pharmacogenomic approaches and the use of innovative technologies, show promise in revolutionizing mental health treatment.
