Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions. There are standard treatments for OCD that do not work for individuals that are considered treatment-resistant and cannabis is currently being explored as a potential novel therapy, as the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is implicated in both OCD and cannabis use/misuse. Individuals that have OCD are more likely to use and misuse cannabis at higher rates compared to the general population, yet is not clear whether cannabis alleviates or exacerbates OCD symptoms. The reason individuals with OCD may use and misuse cannabis at a higher rate may be due to shared psychological behavior traits and conditions, genetic and environmental factor overlap, and/or self-medication. Case and clinical studies have helped explore cannabis as a potential treatment for OCD, but there are limited efficacious findings and several limitations within the research. Future research should explore the connection between OCD and cannabis use and misuse carefully using larger samples and longitudinal, representative data to better understand this relationship.
