The Hippocampus and Impulsivity: Linking in Cannabinoid Receptor 1

The hippocampus is a subcortical structure first discovered in the sixteenth century, although its function was not described until the twentieth century. It is recognized primarily for its role in memory formation and spatial memory. Recently, its involvement in self-control has been explored, and some evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system is part of the mechanisms underlying this function. Recent research has shown that the endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in behavior regulation, including self-control. A high density of cannabinoid type 1 receptors (CB1R) has been found in the hippocampus, indicating a direct interaction between this system and hippocampal function in self-control. Studies in animal models have demonstrated that activation of cannabinoid receptors in the hippocampus can modulate impulsivity and alcohol consumption, supporting the idea that the endocannabinoid system is an integral part of the mechanisms underlying self-control. Additionally, there is growing evidence that this system may play a significant role in impulsive behavior in adolescents, further highlighting its importance in understanding and addressing impulsivity-related issues.
