Neurotrophic Factor: Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) and Depressive Disorder

Neurotrophic factors, including epidermal growth factor (EGF), have complex interaction in their signaling pathways that are crucial for the development of depressive disorders. This present chapter explores the intricate interplay of neurotrophic factors, specifically brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), and epidermal growth factor (EGF), within the context of depression. This chapter examines the impact of these factors on a range of neurological processes, including synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis, control of neurotransmitters, mechanisms of inflammation, and the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Furthermore, the chapter elucidates the ramifications of these interactions in terms of comprehending the evolutionary underpinnings of depression, detecting biomarkers, and formulating individualized therapeutic strategies. This chapter examines the challenges and potential opportunities associated with targeting neurotrophic factors and EGF signaling pathways. Additionally, it explores the progress made in translational research and precision psychiatry. Novel solutions are proposed to promote therapy efficacy and patient outcomes in depression by integrating pharmaceutical, psychological, lifestyle, and alternative therapeutic approaches. This chapter has uncovered gaps in knowledge on the precise mechanisms that contribute to neurotrophic dysregulation and the heterogeneity in treatment responses among individuals.
