Prolactin (PRL): Physiology and Physiopathology in Depression Subtypes and Metabolic Disorders and Their Comorbidity

Prolactin (PRL) may contribute to mental disorders, including depression and depression-related subtypes (e.g., seasonal affective disorder, suicidal attempts, postpartum depression), and it can function as a marker of stress, psychopathology, and depression response to psychiatric therapy. Studies have reported different dynamics of PRL response to its inhibitory or stimulatory factors in patients with depression, either drug-naïve or on antidepressant therapy, paving the way for a possible novel diagnostic tool of PRL response within depression. PRL plays a role in metabolic and cardiovascular diseases; the PRL pathway-related genes (i.e., PRL, PRL receptor [PRLR]) contribute to the risk for major depressive disorder, type 2 diabetes, and their comorbidity.
