Eating Disorders and Related Behavior: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic
摘要
The global impact of COVID-19, which emerged in late 2019, has had lasting impacts on mental health in the general population, particularly among those with pre-existing mental health conditions. This chapter explores how the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced eating disorders and related behaviors. The widespread changes triggered by the pandemic, including lockdowns, increased mortality rates, and economic downturns, were accompanied by a sharp increase in the prevalence and onset of new cases of eating disorders. Disruptions to daily routines, heightened stress, increased media exposure, and difficulties accessing treatment within widespread lockdowns and closures of public settings likely contributed to this dramatic increase. Healthcare settings faced unique challenges, including prolonged closures, rapid transition to virtual care, the redeployment of healthcare professionals to COVID-19 services, and heightened treatment demand owing to escalating eating disorder cases amid diminished services. Healthcare providers and community organizations responded swiftly, disseminating guidelines for virtual treatment, transitioning from in-person to virtual care, and providing resources and support. This chapter presents a thorough exploration of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on eating disorders, underscoring the importance of adaptive strategies in healthcare delivery and robust community support during times of unprecedented societal upheaval. The information presented encompasses pertinent research and insights relevant to clinicians, researchers, patients, and community organizations. The lessons learned from this unprecedented global health crisis offer valuable insights for individuals, healthcare professionals, and the community to enhance preparedness for future challenges in meeting the needs of those affected by eating disorders.
