Head and neck cancer (HNC) and its treatments produce changes in cosmetically, functionally, and socially significant areas of the body, leading to patients often experiencing significant alterations in appearance and function following HNC and/or its treatment. Approximately, 75% of HNC survivors report experiencing body image concerns, with up to 28% having clinically significant body image-related distress (BID). BID is a multidimensional disorder characterized by a negative self-perceived change in appearance and/or function that substantially contributes to psychosocial impairment, functional morbidity, social isolation, and decreased quality of life (QOL) for HNC survivors. This chapter will discuss the (1) conceptual underpinnings of BID among patients with HNC; (2) epidemiology of HNC-related BID; (3) consequences of BID among patients with HNC; (4) measurement of BID among patients with HNC; and (5) interventions to manage BID in HNC survivors.
