Recovery from stroke is a challenging and long journey that extends beyond the hospital stay. Family caregivers are vital for the success and sustainability of the home-based care of stroke survivors. However, the sudden onset of a stroke and the resulting physical, psychological, and cognitive impairments create complex and demanding caregiving situations. Caregivers are faced with the need to readjust their lives significantly, as they navigate the numerous daily problems that arise throughout the stroke trajectory. The overwhelming stress caused by this biographic life disruption often leads to negative psychological consequences for the caregivers. Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that there is also potential for positive growth during the caregiving journey. This chapter goes on to discuss research in psychological profiles of stroke caregivers, utilizing the relational/problem-solving model of stress as a framework. Specifically, the roles of emotion in both the appraisal and consequences of caregiving situations.
