Changes in Behavior and Psychology in Diabetes: Interlinking Erectile Dysfunction
摘要
In 2004, around 422 million adults were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM). The prevalence of DM was 2.8% of world population in 2000 and is expected to reach 4.4% by 2030. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that has physical complications as well as established psychological connections and consequences that may lead to mental health comorbidities such as depression and anxiety. Men with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction, with an incidence that varies from 20% to 75%. A recent study that looked into the role of health beliefs in DM noted that Leventhal’s Common Sense Model of self-regulation would be more suitable as it takes into account both the mental and emotional processes that are involved in managing an illness. The American Diabetes Association, in the 2019 and 2021 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, advised adopting a multidisciplinary approach to improve sexual function and general well-being of patients.
