Measures of Psychiatric Changes in Type 1 Diabetes: Depression, Bipolar, and Beyond
摘要
Diabetes, as a chronic metabolic disorder, may significantly impact the patients’ psychological well-being, contributing to a bidirectional relationship between diabetes management and psychological health. Psychological challenges, including diabetes distress, diabetes burnout, fear of hypoglycemia, and eating disorders, are prevalent among diabetic patients and can hinder effective disease management by affecting motivation, self-care behaviors, and adherence to treatment protocols. One of the most common mental health problems in patients with diabetes is depression, and its ethology is multifactorial. The constant requirement for self-management, including monitoring blood glucose levels, dietary restrictions, and regular medication, imposes a significant psychological burden, often leading to burnout. The chapter advocates for a holistic approach in diabetes care that not only addresses physical health but also prioritizes mental health, enhancing overall quality of life and treatment efficacy for diabetic individuals.
