Reflections on the Touring Exhibition “World of Shojo Manga” (2005–2023)

This chapter describes the touring exhibitions of shōjo manga organized by the author, Shojo Manga! Girl Power! (2005–2008) and World of Shojo Manga: Mirrors of Women’s Desires (2013–2023)—as well as spin-off shows, beginning in 2005 in the US and concluding in Amami City, Japan, in 2023. In the chapter, the author reflects on the exhibitions and lecture series that traveled to 16 countries, discusses the evolving role of shōjo manga, and explores the history of women in Japan. The value and characteristics of 23 manga artists who contributed to the development of shōjo manga were introduced through this touring exhibition. The chapter also includes anecdotes featuring manga artists involved in developing the exhibitions.
