A Review on Utilization of Various Industrial Waste as a Fillers Material in Bituminous Mixes

Hot bituminous mix is broadly used to form the flexible pavements. As we know it will take huge investments by any nation for developing bituminous mix pavements. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize the cost of construction as well as to make it environment friendly. The main constituents of bituminous mix are coarse aggregate, fine aggregates, binder and filler. The role of filler is very important in hot bituminous mix to fill the void. Lime and cement are the commonly used as fillers. There is a need to study the use of various industrial waste as a filler material for safe disposal and for environment friendly way. The present study gives the review of various industrial waste materials such as red mud, copper slag powder, marble dust; terracotta stone dust, rice husk ash and limestone dust as a filler material in bituminous mixes, which gives the satisfactory performance in terms of volumetric and mechanical properties of mix. Mixes with porous fillers like rice husk ash & red mud have higher air voids than lime and cement, which will result in higher bitumen consumption. Red mud and limes stone dust shows superior stiffness and better cracking resistance.
