A Smart Pulse Oximeter for Remote Patient Monitoring and Critical Alerts

In recent times, remote patient health monitoring has become significantly important, primarily because of the increasing burden on hospitals. Due to this, hospital management often struggles to keep a vigilant eye on patients, which, in turn, adds to the workload of doctors. Commercially available heart rate monitors and pulse oximeters lack intelligence, accuracy, and the capability to connect to an IoT platform. In contrast, the proposed device employs intelligent design and systematic signal processing techniques. This system finds its applicability in hospital settings, where doctors and nurses can conveniently monitor a patient’s heart rate and oxygen saturation levels from anywhere using a computer or smartphone. This not only saves patients time and money by reducing the need for travel, which is particularly beneficial for those residing in suburban or rural areas but also enhances healthcare. This research presents a microcontroller-based health monitoring system that measures a patient’s Heart Rate along with Oxygen Saturation (SpO2). The smart pulse oximeter continuously tracks blood oxygen levels and heart rate while transmitting this data to the Ubidots IoT platform. Moreover, it can trigger critical medical alerts through voice calls, SMS, email, and messages, ensuring swift assistance and support from hospital management and ambulance services during challenging situations.
