A Study on the Selection of Commercially Available Scooters in the Indian Market Using the TOPSIS Method

In many Asian countries, scooters serve as a primary means of transportation due to their cost-effectiveness and lower consumption of resources such as fuel and space. Unlike cars, scooters occupy approximately 15–25% of the space per capita and significantly contribute to lesser CO2 emissions and energy usage. This paper examines the factors influencing scooter selection in the Indian market, using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) as a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tool. We identified key selection criteria—kerb weight, mileage, top speed, fuel tank capacity, and price—to evaluate popular scooters. Our analysis revealed the “Suzuki Access 125” as the leading option, demonstrating an optimal balance of efficiency and cost. Following the TOPSIS rankings, the Suzuki Access 125 emerged first, with a 5.6 L fuel capacity, 64.00 kmpl mileage, 92 kmph top speed, and a starting price of ₹ 79,400. This study assists potential buyers in making informed decisions and contributes to the understanding of consumer preferences in emerging markets.
