Conclusion

This chapter summarises the findings in analysing reporting of poverty in the Manchester Guardian, Manchester Examiner and Times, and Manchester Courier during the Cotton Crisis. It briefly revisits Jameson’s intention and approach in his seminal text The Political Unconscious. It considers the possibility of confronting History as one long nightmare and challenging how poverty, and protest, is reported. I argue that journalism can change to share its revulsion to poverty rather than a representation of it and can contribute to working towards eradicating the experience rather than simply observing.
